21. 5 Hair Myths we NEED to debunk…

There are so many white lies in the hair world that we’ve all fallen into the trap of at least once in our lives. Remember when we thought that brushing 100 times would leave us with silky smooth hair? (when really it just left us with a dead arm and a neck ache), or when we were convinced that Lemon Juice was going to leave us with bleach blonde, sun-kissed streaks by the end of summer if we used it every day? (That one left us with dry, sometimes yellow, damaged hair…) or the old chestnut that our parents told us when we were younger - that its the stress that makes grey… Not that they were getting older and it was a natural part of ageing… Either way we’ve all fallen for one or two hair myths before, so we’re here to set the record straight on at least five!

  1. You should only shampoo your hair once

This is the biggest myth of them all -wash, lather, rinse, condition right? Wrong. Truth be told, we should be shampooing TWICE. Once to was away the days sins, (obv) and the second to cleanse.  The second wash is imperative for cleansing  - this is where the nourishing properties of your shampoo can really get to work. Your first shampoo should be a smaller one (it may not lather a much) and then you should rinse and shampoo again… don’t get us wrong this may not be for everyone but give it a try on your next wash day! You might just be surprised.

2. You must come to the hairdressers with dirty hair…

Even this one I thought was true before working in the industry! We’ve all heard that ‘the colour sticks more’ or ‘its more vibrant’ when we come in with days old, gym sweat, salty hair. Its simply not true… the general rule of thumb is that you have cleanish hair, (1-2 days since washing) so we can get to know your hair in its natural state - this will give you the best results in the long run for your hair!

3. The more bubbles, the better

We tend to think that more of something is always better but in this case it’s the complete opposite. You’ll find that with your salon products, even though they don’t bubble as much as your Coles or woolies ones, you still don’t need as much product.  What we say is that if you’re finding that your shampoo doesn’t seem to be going far, add more water! A splash more water is going to make all the difference in your wash. These salon products are really concentrated, so a little goes a long way!

4. The hotter the water, the cleaner the hair…

I think the notion of the hotter the cleaner is one for the dark ages, its better on the bank balance, the environment AND your hair. A warm shampoo (not steamy hot), followed by a warm-to-cool water rinse, can minimise cuticle frizz. You should opt for a good shine-boosting, leave-in conditioner- we LOVE the Oribe Super Shine Moisturising cream!

5. Your hair gets ‘used to’ your hair products

If you (like me) are guilty of buying a new brand of shampoo every few months because you think your hair has become immune to the qualities the products provide, the good news is, this isn’t a real thing! Your hair cant possibly become immune to your favourite products - so there’s absolutely no harm in keeping them close. What can happen, is your hair can respond differently to different environmental factors. Cold weather, humidity, colour treatments can all contribute to you needing to change your products up every now and then - there’s no harm in having different products for different times of year either! (For me, any excuse to try new products is a good one)
